Introductory Post: “Digital Residents Vs Digital Visitors”. Which side do you belong?

Technology is altering the way that we live our lives. With technology development, we are empowered to accomplish more tasks in lesser time, with less effort and greater productivity. Hence with these capabilities, our interactions with other people have changed remarkably. As technology evolves, “Social Networking” or “Social Media” emerged, a platform which oblige us to communicate with a much broader group of people.

Today, we can Skype with people in different continents, use Twitter to track global trends, manage numerous email accounts from our gadgets, coordinate with fellow associates on LinkedIn, share photos and stories from last night on SnapChat and WhatsApp, launch a brand/business on Instagram, create a community on Facebook, stream our favourite global podcasts, get latest updates from news apps, order a taxi with Uber and monitor our daily calorie with FitBit.

What’s more?

We can do all of these things without even getting out of bed!

Here in the digital world, technology and the Internet has regulated the way society interact, act, connect and contemplate in distinct ways. Undoubtedly, many of us have assimilated into the digital world. Nevertheless, our level of commitment varies. Therefore, by adopting the ‘residents’ and ‘visitors’ framework, it may aid us to assess and determine the level of engagement people have with technology and the web, accordingly to our habits and inclinations.

“Residency” pointed the idea of living on the web whereas “Visiting” perceive the web as somewhere to go to get things done – somewhere to pop in and out without abiding. It is perfectly possible for someone to be passively resident, e.g. someone who only listens to music online and to other people’s playlists and recommendations, but who does not share theirs.

Am I a “Resident” or a “Visitor”?

Well obviously, looking at my age, who in my era are not a Digital Resident? My life kinda revolves around the web where I regularly update my social media websites to maintain my online persona. I have various online identities and am constantly on my phone and computer to communicate with others.

I believe that It is one’s choice on whether to trifle in the digital world. However, now that digital technology has advanced significantly, it is impossible to totally avoid it. Be it a ‘Visitor’ or a ‘Resident’, we cannot neglect the convenience digital technology provides.
